Bus Drivers: The First Influencers of the Day

When students step onto the bus, their day begins — and the adults they see first, their bus driver and attendant, serve as powerful external influencers.

Research shows that consistent recognition and proactive supervision on the bus not only reduce misbehavior, but also set the tone for how students engage with peers and teachers once they arrive at school. By modeling respect, reinforcing expectations, and building relationships, bus staff influence how students transition into the classroom.

That’s why the Launch!™ School Bus Safety Program trains drivers and attendants to see themselves as more than supervisors — they are mentors, role models, and the first adults to shape a child’s readiness to learn each day. Grounded in the Pyramid Model and PBIS, the program equips transportation staff with tools to strengthen their influence in positive, lasting ways.

When bus drivers and attendants act as external influencers, every ride becomes a chance to build safety, trust, and school readiness.

That’s why our intervention-based training equips drivers and attendants with tools that go beyond managing behavior. Students’ behavior is intentionally recognized, promoting safety, school-readiness, and strong self-regulation skills necessary for school success.

Aligned with the evidence-based Pyramid Model and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), the program shows staff how to give specific praise that highlights safe, respectful, and responsible actions. Drivers practice writing positive student referrals that students can proudly take home, and they learn how to acknowledge the entire bus when expectations are met.

These strategies are simple but powerful: they build trust, set consistent expectations, and help every student feel seen for their positive choices.

By supporting transportation staff with these recognition strategies, Launch!™ ensures that the ride to school becomes a proactive learning environment — one that strengthens safety, nurtures self-regulation, and prepares students to step off the bus ready to learn.
