Lisa’s Story:

Lisa Navarra, was a Special Education Teacher for over 20 years, Behavior Specialist, Author, Speaker and parent. Lisa’s education and teaching experiences include earning a M.A. Ed. In Special Education and certificate in School District Administration, teaching grades Pre-K, K-5, 10-12, adjunct professor, conducted FBA’s and BIP’s, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Specialist as well as other leadership positions.

Throughout my career, I have educated many children who I will always remember. One such memory is a girl who entered 2nd grade with the fixed mindset of if she was not perfect, didn’t get the answers right or didn’t reach her own appointed self-expectation then she did not have value and was not good enough. If asked to write a word or a sentence and she didn’t know the exact spelling, she would freeze, become frustrated and cry. Her confidence was low and she was sad.

As time passed, we worked together so she would learn using a growth mindset and use her research-based learning tools from her toolkit. After a few months, she began to believe in herself and accept that her best was good enough. When June rolled around, she was teaching (even if they didn’t need it) other students to believe in themselves. She embraced positive self-talk and was quick to say, “It’s ok if you made a messed up.” There were times, she encouraged other students to take a calm breath as she counted for them so they could have a “calm mind and calm body.” You’ll find her in my books, Henry Learns to Launch and Henry’s Thoughts!

It’s experiences and memories like this that make years of research in neuroscience, positive psychology, social-emotional learning and education so rewarding. Through the development of the cognitive skills in “how to learn”, I have seen 100’s of student acquire, access and apply information taught so they can engage in goal-oriented behaviors and reach their potential. My most validating moments are when my students or private clients have walked out the door feeling confident, believing in themselves and ready to face any challenge that comes their way. As an educator, I can’t think of anything better! These lessons and so many more are taught as Child Behavior Consulting teaches students, educators and parents with easy, practical strategies that support “how to learn”.
